Institut et Centre d’ Optometrie,(ICO) Bures, France and Lotus College of Optometry, Mumbai, India’s, Indo French Student Faculty Exchange Program

February 2018, was the 12th successful Indo-French exchange program between, ICO, Visionsolidev, France and Lotus College of Optometry, India. The program is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Schools of Optometry for exchange of knowledge and culture. An 11 member delegation, comprising of 8 students and 3 faculty members were in India from February 24 –March 3, 2018. The journey began with Mumbai Darshan for the French group which gave them a sneak peak of Amchi Mumbai.

 

The French group had a warm reception at Lotus College on February 26th, by Faculty and students. Following this, an induction was done for the activities planned for the next six days.

 

During the subsequent days, pediatric camps under the ongoing project of Kangaroo Kids Foundation were organized. Students of Lotus and ICO, under faculty supervision worked to examine patients, prescribe spectacles, screen for ocular diseases and referred the patients to the hospital for further evaluation.

1285 children were screened in five camps which included one camp for children who were hearing impaired. Several ocular morbidity conditions were detected like, uncorrected refractive errors, binocular vision anomalies, anterior segment diseases like cataract, and glaucoma.

Shree Naval.P Baliwalla Scientific Session

On the occasion of Founder’s Day, on March 2, 2018, Ninth Shree Naval P. Baliwalla scientific session was organized. Students from ICO as well as Lotus participated with oral, poster and case presentations. The session had 7 oral and 12 posters, presented by students of Lotus College and ICO. The evening was cultural exchange where the audiences were enthralled with some excellent performances by both Indian and French students.

We wish to thank Institut et Centre d’ Optometrie,(ICO) and the various local organizations with whom the eye camps were conducted. We wish to thank Kangaroo Kids Foundation, Forus Healthcare, Vision Solidev, Essilor Vision Foundation & Rotary club for sponsoring the eye camps and helping us in reaching out eyecare services to the underprivileged children of Mumbai. It is just not eyecare services but also it helps to train and develop social responsibility in the eye care practitioners of tomorrow in India and France.
